Activities
The UK has much to offer in terms of sports, leisure and cultural activities, and each depends on its supporters and users. Whether you wish to find familiar leisure pursuits or try something new with your spare time, there are huge benefits - from improving mental health to helping to build stronger community bonds.
Many UK citizens enjoy sports as a hobby, whether watching, practicing or following. Football is one of the country’s most popular sports and it is relatively easy to find an amateur club where you can play on a regular basis. If you have a favourite UK professional football team you will quickly have a talking point with your friends and neighbours. There is a range of other sports activities and gyms who would be glad to have new members join.
Shopping is another popular leisure activity. From local stores to large shopping centres to online shopping and farmers' markets, many people enjoy hunting for bargains and special purchases.
There are many museums, art galleries and other attractions. Many of these are free to enter, although there may be charges for special exhibitions. There are also many historic buildings, gardens and special sites you can visit. Some are free, and some charge for admission. Many are administered by organisations such as the National Trust, National Trust for Scotland, Cadw (in Wales), English Heritage and Historic Scotland.
In the countryside, there are beautiful beaches, national parks and other scenic areas. Walking clubs can be a good way to explore the countryside and meet new friends.
We hope you will find local churches very welcoming. Most will have Sunday services and midweek activities where you can make new friends and find practical and spiritual support.
Look out for festivals and special events. From St Valentine's Day in February to Guy Fawkes' night in November, associated celebrations will give you great insights into British culture and heritage.
