Host The Welcome Course for people arriving from Hong Kong, and elsewhere, in your neighbourhood.
Arriving in a new country is a daunting experience: you have to find a place to stay, look for jobs and school places, and get all these done quickly. And as if life is not already complicated enough, you also have to navigate through an unfamiliar cultural landscape. Your new Neighbours may have questions such as:
Is it appropriate to talk about how much I earn in the UK?
How do I get an invite to my neighbour’s house?
What is Guy Fawkes night about?
‘If only there are friendly, understanding people to show us the ropes! Especially those with whom we can feel safe to ask questions and share our own stories, without worrying that we might make a fool of ourselves. A safe space to share, to ask.’
Such a place is a crossroad of cultures – it is also the very act of welcoming.
We would like to invite you, UK regional organisations, communities and Christian churches supporting new-arrivals from Hong Kong, to help build this welcoming space, by hosting The Welcome Course for people from Hong Kong in your neighbourhood. The Welcome Course provides a tool to bridge the relational gap between new arrivals and the local community. Attendees can develop English conversational skills and confidence, build friendships, learn about British culture, be signposted to services and share their knowledge of Hong Kong culture. Six short professionally-produced videos will provide light-hearted inspirational conversation and discussion starters. Join us today for an exciting chance in cultural exchanges – and the beginning of lasting connections and friendships!
Welcome Course Preview
The Welcome Course includes these materials: weekly video content; a set of questions and quizzes; and a delivery platform. You can have a look at Episode 1: Welcome to the UK here.
1 Video Content
Each episode video is divided into 4 parts, with discussions and fun quizzes in the intervals to encourage participation and sharing.
2 Questions and Quizzes
Wondering how to facilitate discussions as a host? Let us help! In the Welcome Course, we place questions and fun quizzes (like the one featured here) between the video sessions. After participants have submitted the answers online / discussed them in person, the host and the participants can see the anonymised responses and discuss them together.
Course length and Format
The sessions will be run over six weeks, within smaller discussion groups, giving people a chance to ask questions and discuss video content. Each session will last an hour or so, depending on how individual churches and communities decide to run it and may include food.
The Welcome Course are available for free in English with Cantonese subtitles.
